A Class ChalkBoard
by Anna and Emily, Cape Elizabeth, grade 5

This is a photo of a classroom chalkboard. It is a blackboard.
In classrooms all over the world, teachers and students  draw and write on boards.   There are different kinds of boards on classroom walls.  There are bulletin boards, whiteboards, blackboards, greenboards, and chalkboards.  These  talking walls have information, stories, and pictures.

Some classroom teachers write their homework on the chalkboard.  Sometimes they use shortcuts like writing S.S. for social studies, Sci for science, Sp for spelling, and L.A. for language arts. The blackboard in the picture uses shortcuts. Teachers usually put the date on the board so you can remember to put it on your papers.

A talking wall is a place where a community shares information.

Questions to think about:
1. Does your classroom have a chalkboard with information to share?
2. Is is a whiteboard, a greenboard, or a blackboard?
3. Does your teacher ever put papers from students on the blackboard ?
4. Our school also has bulletin boards. Does yours ?
5. Do you think your grandparent's schoolroom had chalkboards? Ask them if you can.
