AUSTRALIAN TALKING
WALLS
by Kilton, Cape Elizabeth, grade
5
This talking wall is actually inside Carnarvon Gorge
in Carnarvon Nation Park, in Northern Queensland, Australia. For over
20,000 years Aboringinies have lived here. They made stencils, rock
art and engravings all over the walls representing information about their
tribes, themselves, and the way they live. This is their recorded
history. It was discovered in 1857 by the Europeans. People travel
from all over the world to see these great works of art created by the
Aboriginies. I would like to be a part of a wall like this one because
if I knew that it would be discovered so many years later as a great work
of art, I would be proud. I would like to visit a wall like this because
it would be a historical experience that would be interesting as well as
relating to things we have now.
The picture of hands on the right is
part of the larger picture seen above. If you can find the arc in the big
picture, you can look carefully and see the hands that are in this
closeup.
Questions:
1. Do you think there is a wall like
this in your town that resembles these walls in any way?
2. What are the differences and
similarities?
3. In what way do you think these three
walls are alike and different?
