The Vietnam Veterans Memorial
By Kyle and Jon, Cape Elizabeth, grade 5
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located on the mall between the
Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Many people
tour the wall every day. On the memorial all the names of over 58,000 servicemen
and women that died or who are still missing from the Vietnam
War. The wall was dedicated in 1982 to honor all the men and women who gave
their lives in the Vietnam War.Most people have different emotions about
the wall. Some people feel sad. Others feel that itís a great historic
memorial and a great way t o honor the people that gave their lives. We feel
that it would be a great honor to be a part of a wall like that. This
wall talks by sharing the great servicemen and womens names that sacrificed
their lives. People talk to the wall by placing flowers, flags, holiday gifts, and
plaques for the people who died in the war.
We have a couple questions for
you.....
#1 Why or why not do you
think this is a talking wall?
#2 What are your feelings
about the Vietnam Memorial?
#3 Have you visited or
seen a memorial wall like this before?
#4 Why do you think the
people left flowers, flags, holiday gifts, and plaques?
