Books and Bagels

Books and Bagels Reading Group meets monthly to discuss books while enjoying a yummy breakfast. Each month students are offered two books to select from and have four weeks to read their book. Our reading group provides a forum for the meaningful discussion of books with the emphasis on enjoyment. Our hope is that the ultimate result is a gradual refinement and maturing of students' taste in reading. Students may join Books and Bagels Reading Group any time during the school year. Please stop by the library and/or listen to the daily announcements for more information.

Math Team

The CEHS Math Team competes in the MAML (Maine Association of Math Leagues) competition, in which students earn points for their schools by correctly solving problems both individually and as a team. There are five meets per year on Wednesday afternoons; students can come to some or all meets as they choose by signing up by the Friday before the meet. Many math teachers give extra credit to students who attend, so ask yours. Cape Elizabeth's 10 best performers on the regular meets are invited to the State Meet in the spring.

Science Team

The CEHS Science Team competes in the North Shore Science League, a competition among high schools on the North Shore of Massachusetts, which holds six meets per year, and the Maine Science Olympiad, a contest between Maine high schools which is held in the spring at USM. Events span all areas of the sciences. Many events require preparation, so students interested in going should ask well beforehand.

World Affairs Council

The World Affairs Council is a group of students who meet biweekly to plan events and discuss issues of global importance. Group meetings involve speakers, films and discussions, while off-site events include lectures, symposiums, films and ethnic dining outings!!! Students also research, write position papers for, and practice deliberation in preparation for various Model United Nations Conferences throughout the Northeast.

The World Affairs Council strives to increase awareness of world affairs, deepen understanding of cultural differences and global problems, and to get students to engage with issues confronting the world through conversation, simulation, and experiential learning. The Council helps students develop appreciation for different perspectives by providing an environment where students can learn about different and sometimes conflicting points of view without bias towards any given side. Through its design and activities, the Council fosters student collaboration and leadership skills. Participation enhances students' critical thinking, organizational and debate skills.
