If your student needs to be dismissed, send them with a note to bring to the office before the beginning of the school day
Dear CEHS Parents:
I am writing to ask your assistance.
When your child needs to be dismissed during school for an appointment, the easy procedure is as follows:
- The
student brings a note from you to the office in the morning, before
school (the next best option is to call at the beginning of the day,
but it's not as good as a note because a call entails calling the
student to the office, probably out of class, to get a dismissal pass)
- The student is given a dismissal note to show to the teacher before class begins
- The student comes to the office and signs out before leaving
We
have had an increasing number of instances where parents are coming to
school to take their children to attend appointments, without us having
notice in advance. When that happens, here is what happens:
- Secretary looks up student's schedule to figure out where s/he is scheduled
to be, assuming they're not in the bathroom or nurse's office, or
staying late to finish up a test/quiz in another teacher's room, or
having a followup conversation with a previous class's teacher, or in
the Assistant Principal's office or Guidance office, or any of a number
of other perfectly legitimate places where the students may be when
they are not in class.
- Secretary interrputs entire class by calling for student over intercom into classroom. Assuming
the student is in a classroom where the intercom can be heard (e.g.,
not the band room, gym, industrial technology, and a few others), and provided
the class is actually in the classroom and not in another place where
teachers sometime take their classes (library; Achievement Center;
outside to shoot off bottle rockets; or in hallway or stairwells doing
all sorts of science experiments; on mountain bikes somewhere within a
3-mile radius of school; or outside taking photos or working on
drawings; or in Portland at a Portland Stage Company theater
production), and if the student has not started an activity
that can't be interrupted (e.g., a test or quiz which the teacher
wouldn't have had the student begin if they had known in advance about
the impending dismissal), then the student will be sent up to the
office. Usually, the parent has to wait several minutes for the student
to actually get to the office, as the student either finishes
up a test or quiz, stops at the bathroom or locker, chats with a friend
who happens to be in the hallway, etc.
- If
the class is not in the room or the class is but the student isn't,
then the secretaries either launch a man (or woman)-hunt, sending Mr.
Henninger scurrying all around the school, or do an all-call
annoucement for the student, interrupting every classroom in the
school. Meanwhile, while the hunt is on, the parent is getting
increasingly frustrated, wondering "what kind of school we're running"
because we don't know where students are every minute of the day. And,
of course, the odds are increasing with every moment the hunt goes on
that the student will be late for the appointment or the parent will be
late for the next in a string of activities they have after this
particular errand is complete.
- Eventually,
the student is located, comes to the office and moves along to the
appointment, hopefully not at such a high rate of speed (because
they're now behind schedule) that they get stopped on route 77 for
speeding by Officer Dorval or another friendly Cape Elizabeth police
officer, causing them to miss the appointment altogether, which if the
appointment is for a driver's test may disrupt the student's dream of
liberation from parental oversight for another three months until the
test can be rescheduled, meanwhile saddling the parent with three more
avoidable months of chauffering the younger brother/sister to premier
soccer practices, or friend's houses, all for the lack of a morning
note...
- Of
course, in this day of cell phones, the parent can attempt to short
circuit this process by text messaging the student in the middle of the
day. This might work, or it might result in the teacher's confiscation
of the student's cell phone because students are not supposed to use
phones during class because they are a significant disruption. Or if
the student happens to be taking a test/quiz when the text message is
received, the teacher may be understandably sensitive and confiscate
the test/quiz, downgrading the student for suspected cheating (cell
phone cheating is not an unknown occurrence in the 21st century). Or
the cell phone may be in the student's backpack while the student is in
the bathroom or at his/her locker. In either case, student is then in
an irritable mood when s/he eventually arrives in the office, unhappy
with parent for not making life easier by simply sending a note with
him/her at the beginning of the day...
Please help us and yourselves: if your student needs to be dismissed, send them with a note to bring to the office before the beginning of the school day. This process helps us out--and you, too. Thank you. Have a wonderful holiday season.

CEHS Principal
