School Board - Committee Descriptions

School Board Committee Structure

STANDING COMMITTEES
Standing committees are established by the School Board and the Board Chairperson appoints members. Appointments are subject to final approval of the Board.  Each committee has a specific function and may advise the Board on matters related to its charge, but may not act for the Board.  Membership includes elected Board members and others who may serve in a non-voting advisory capacity.

Finance Committee
Purpose: Assist with development and adoption of annual budget; periodically review financial management reports; provide strategic direction for funding decisions; collaborate with Town Council to guide the budget process, including presentation of information to voters; review facilities’ and equipment condition and adequacy; address other financial issues as needed

Policy Committee
Purpose: develop, adopt and review policies, which guide the operations and educational mission of the school district


COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS
Committee appointments are made to either district wide committees other than standing board committees, or to committees outside of the district on which the Board would like representation or has been requested to provide such. These Committees are not necessarily created by the Board, but may advise the Board on matters related to their specific function.

Cape Elizabeth Education Foundation
Purpose: Serve as communication liaison between School Board and CEEF

Maine School Management Association Delegate
Purpose: Receive resolutions of MSMA, distribute to Board, get Board consensus and then vote this ballot at the delegate assembly at MSMA’s fall Conference; act as liaison as necessary; communicate nomination requests for the MSMA board positions

PATHS General Advisory Board
Purpose: Represent local school district on this regional board; represent interests of Cape Elizabeth school department in governance of PATH; act as liaison to communicate PATHS budget to local school board for adoption; act as advocate of PATHS; apprise board and community of developments related to programming there.

Technology Steering Committee
Purpose: Advances the access and use of technology within our schools and town.  Maintains technology equipment and plans for upgrades, etc.


BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEES
Advisory Committees are established by the Board to perform a specific function i.e. study a particular problem or issue. The committee may make recommendations to the Board but may not act for the Board. Membership may include individuals who are not elected members of the Board.

Legislative Liaison
Purpose: Receive information about pending legislation in Augusta and Washington, communicate such to the Board, and then communicate Board’s views to legislators as appropriate.

Positive Action Committee
Purpose: to assist administration with drop-out prevention, as needed.
