LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Superintendent begins public dialogue on Future Direction
with question about schools' vision statement
As the Superintendent of Cape Elizabeth schools, my focus
is on effective educational programs for the young people of
Cape Elizabeth. That work is basic to the future of our town,
our state, our nation and our world. Five years ago, this community
came together to develop a Five Year Educational Plan. The
actual plan can be found on the school system’s website
at the Superintendent’s Office and then under Mission
and Vision. To download the plan in pdf format, click Future
Direction Plan. We are now reviewing the content of the
original plan, assessing our
successes
and
needs,
and
extending
a plan
for the future.
Over the next few months, the Strategic Planning Committee,
chaired by School Board member Trish Brigham, will institute
a plan that engages members
of
the
School Board, staff, parents, Cape Elizabeth citizens who do
not have children in the system, students, and the administration.
At
the same time, the Superintendent’s communication with
the community is extremely important. In the next month, I
will be working with our technology staff and a nationally
known expert to develop a "blog" site to gather and share information
with the public. As that process begins to take shape, I would
like to open the door of communication by using my e-mail address.
To begin this focus, the first planning committee developed
and instituted a vision for our schools. That vision reads:
Cape Elizabeth will be one of the top public school systems
in the U.S. having created a dynamic organization which inspires
an enthusiastic, innovative and collaborative environment that
results in a high level of learning and achievement for all.
With the initial surveys to help develop the revised Cape Elizabeth Comprehensive Plan, through the budget hearings of
last spring, and in frequent individual conversations with
parents of current and graduated students, there is a consistent
theme about the high quality of our schools as a major factor
in living in this community. As Superintendent, I would like
to begin to understand how the public views our educational
programs and what is working and what needs work.
This week I want to start that communication with a question
about the vision. Please take the time to respond to the following
question.
My initial question to you focuses on that part of the vision
statement that reads “Cape Elizabeth will be
one of the top school systems in the U.S. . . .”
What does that statement mean to you and how do our schools
meet or not meet that plan?
Please address your responses to me at ahawkins@cape.k12.me.us or send them to me at P.O. Box 6267, Cape Elizabeth, Maine
04107.
Thank you for reading this new communication tool and for
participating.
