Download: Principal's Notes: Week of 6 January 2020
Dear Pond Cove Families,
Happy New Year! I apologize for not sending out Principal’s Notes last week. Given that there were only two days in the week, I decided not to send one. I am hopeful that this worked for all of you.
I would like to remind you that the dismissal time for students being picked up by a parent has been changed a bit for early release professional development Wednesdays. Historically, pick-up students were released at 1:50, but will now be dismissed at 2:00. This should not impact the time students have been arriving at bus stops. This adjustment was put in place for our December PD Wednesday and dismissal went quite smoothly.
I am excited to let you all know that I will include a Classroom Highlight in my Principal’s Notes whenever possible. Our teachers already do an outstanding job of communicating with parents/guardians regarding instruction in their own classrooms. I look forward to sharing their great work with the larger school community.
Classroom Highlight - Mrs. Adams’ Grade 3 Classroom
Last week I had the pleasure of visiting a STEM lesson in Mrs. Adam’s grade 3 classroom. STEM is based on the idea of educating students in four disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate subjects, STEM integrates them into a learning paradigm based on real-world applications.
Like all grade 3 teachers at Pond Cove, Mrs. Adams recently addressed multiple content standards and Habits of Work through a comprehensive study of ancient Egyptian civilization. Among many other concepts and facts, students learned that the Nile River was used for transporting all types of goods in ancient times. They also learned about the characteristics of the papyrus plant. This information provided a wonderful foundation for the Reed Boat Model Engineering Project. Teams of students were challenged to build a boat using straws (papyrus) which could hold as many pennies (goods) as possible. After seeing the results, teams had an opportunity to make adjustments in order to improve their vessel. This inquiry-based STEM activity promoted group planning and collaborative problem solving. Great Job Mrs. Adams’ Class!
Substitutes Teachers and Nurses Needed
We are still in need of subs for the 2019-2020 school year. Substitute teaching can be a rewarding job; it’s flexible and allows people to decide their own schedule and not commit to a full-time job. Subbing can also be a great experience for those who want to pursue a career in education by allowing one to try out different grade levels, schools, and subjects. In order to sub in Cape, applicants must:
*have, or be eligible to obtain a Maine CHRC check (fingerprinting), as well as an approved background check (district will provide).
*have a high school diploma to be considered.
The pay is $90 per day for daily assignments. There is additional compensation for assignments that last longer than 15 consecutive days.
If you think you might be interested in being a substitute teacher, please go to the employment page of our website (Cape Schools Substitute Teaching Application) to fill out an application.
